Typical Applications of Polyurethane Foaming Agents

Polyurethane foaming agents, also known as one-component polyurethane foam jointing agents, are versatile products resulting from the fusion of aerosol technology and polyurethane foam technology. These foaming agents consist of essential components such as polyurethane prepolymer, blowing agents, and catalysts, all contained within a pressure-resistant aerosol can. When dispensed from the aerosol container, the polyurethane material rapidly expands and solidifies upon contact with air or moisture, creating a foam. Polyurethane foaming agents find extensive applications due to their attributes, including quick expansion, minimal shrinkage, excellent strength, and strong adhesion. The cured foam offers various functionalities, such as caulking, bonding, sealing, heat insulation, and sound absorption. These environmentally friendly and energy-efficient materials are particularly well-suited for applications involving sealing, filling gaps, fixing, and bonding, as well as heat and sound insulation. They excel in sealing, plugging, and waterproofing around plastic, steel, or aluminum doors and windows when used in construction.

Typically, the surface drying time is approximately 10 minutes at a room temperature of 20°C, with the total drying time varying based on ambient temperature and humidity. In summer, it takes roughly 4-6 hours to fully dry, while in colder conditions, such as around freezing, it may take longer. Under normal usage conditions, provided a protective surface layer is applied, these foaming agents are expected to maintain their elasticity and adhesion for at least ten years within a temperature range of -10°C to 80°C. Additionally, flame-retardant versions of polyurethane foaming agents can achieve B and C flame retardant ratings.

Disadvantages:

  1. Polyurethane foam joint sealants may exhibit flow at high temperatures and are less stable than polyurethane rigid foam.
  2. Slow foaming speed can limit their suitability for large-area applications, leading to uneven flatness and poor foam quality.
  3. Polyurethane foam sealants can be relatively expensive.

Typical Applications:

  • Door and Window Installation: Sealing, fixing, and bonding between doors and windows and the adjacent walls.
  • Advertising Models: Ideal for model making, creating sand tables, and repairing exhibition boards.
  • Sound Insulation and Noise Reduction: Used to fill gaps during room decoration, reducing sound transmission.
  • Gardening and Landscaping: Perfect for flower arrangements and landscaping, enhancing aesthetics.
  • Daily Maintenance: Ideal for repairing cavities, gaps, wall tiles, floor tiles, and flooring.
  • Waterproof Plugging: Effective in repairing and sealing leaks in water pipes and sewers.
  • Packaging and Transportation: Convenient for packaging valuable and fragile items, offering protection against shocks and pressure.

Instructions: Before construction, ensure the construction surface is free from oil stains and floating dust, and lightly spray a small amount of water on it. Shake the polyurethane foaming agent can for at least 60 seconds before use to ensure uniform material distribution. If using a gun-type polyurethane foaming agent, connect it to the spray gun thread, open the flow valve, and adjust the flow rate before spraying. For tubular polyurethane foaming agents, attach the plastic nozzle to the valve thread, align the plastic tube with the gap, and press the nozzle to spray. Pay attention to the spraying speed, usually targeting half of the required filling volume. When filling vertical gaps, start from the bottom and work upwards. For overhead gaps, provide temporary support to prevent uncured foam from falling due to gravity. After curing and bonding to the gap walls, remove the support. After about 10 minutes, the foam can be trimmed, followed by coating with cement mortar, paint, or silicone to finish the surface.

Construction Notes:

  • The recommended usage temperature for the polyurethane foaming agent can is between +5°C and +40°C, with the best results achieved between +18°C and +25°C. In cold conditions, allow the product to acclimate at a temperature of +25°C to +30°C for 30 minutes to ensure optimal performance. The cured foam can withstand temperatures ranging from -35°C to +80°C.
  • Polyurethane foaming agents are moisture-curing foams, and they should be applied to damp surfaces. Higher humidity levels lead to faster curing. Uncured foam can be removed with a cleaning agent, while cured foam should be mechanically removed (e.g., sanding or cutting). Cured foam may yellow when exposed to ultraviolet light; it's advisable to coat it with other materials (e.g., cement mortar or paint).
  • After using the spray gun, clean it immediately with a specialized cleaning agent.

Safety Precautions:

  • Uncured foam is adhesive to skin and clothing; avoid skin and clothing contact during use.
  • The polyurethane foaming agent canister is pressurized (5-6kg/cm2 at 25°C) and should be stored and transported below 50°C to prevent tank explosions.
  • Keep polyurethane foaming agent canisters away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
  • After use, especially partially used canisters, do not litter or puncture. Do not burn empty canisters.
  • Avoid open flames and contact with flammable or explosive materials.
  • Ensure good ventilation at the construction site, and construction personnel should wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves, overalls, and goggles. Smoking is prohibited.
  • If foam comes into contact with the eyes, rinse with water before seeking medical attention. For skin contact, wash with water and soap.
